The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has issued an updated construction schedule for Champaign County, detailing multiple active roadway projects and a new closure slated for early August. These ongoing efforts aim to improve regional infrastructure but will continue to impact traffic in key areas.
Active Road Projects Across the County
A range of resurfacing and bridge repair efforts are currently underway:
- State Route 296 remains closed in two segments for bridge work:
- Between Upper Valley Pike and U.S. 68, and
- Between Bates Road and Upper Valley Pike.
Both closures are scheduled to remain in place through Thursday, July 10.
Detour Route: U.S. 68 to Miami Street to Oakland Street.
- State Route 29 in Mechanicsburg has been reduced to a single lane between Railroad Street and Alison Road. The resurfacing work will continue through July, with flaggers maintaining traffic flow.
- State Route 4, also in Mechanicsburg, is down to one lane between Maple Grove Road and East Sandusky Street for road surfacing. Traffic control personnel are stationed on-site.
- State Route 559 is experiencing single-lane restrictions between State Route 29 and Pleasantview Estate. This resurfacing project is expected to run through the end of July.
- State Route 507 is undergoing daytime lane reductions between U.S. 68 and State Route 245, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, continuing through September for repaving.
New Closure Coming to SR 296 in August
In addition to the current closures, ODOT has announced a new bridge repair project on State Route 296, which will close the stretch between Upper Valley Pike and U.S. 68 starting Friday, August 1. This work is scheduled to last until Thursday, August 21.
Detour: U.S. 68 to Miami Street to Oakland Street.

“ODOT continues to invest in critical improvements across Champaign County’s road network,” the agency stated. “These projects are essential to maintaining safe and dependable infrastructure for the traveling public.”
Plan Ahead
ODOT is encouraging drivers to use caution in active work zones and explore alternate routes when possible. “Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and check OHGO.com for the latest travel updates,” the agency added.
These road projects are part of ODOT’s ongoing summer construction efforts to repair aging infrastructure and enhance roadway safety across Ohio. Local residents and commuters should remain alert to signage, reduced speed zones, and construction crews while traveling through affected areas.
The agency noted that while the short-term impacts include detours and delays, the long-term goal is a more resilient and efficient road system throughout the county. ODOT is also using real-time traffic tools to help travelers navigate around construction zones.
ODOT’s planning strategy considers traffic volume, pavement conditions, and bridge ratings to prioritize projects. The work underway in Champaign County reflects the department’s broader statewide focus on improving regional transportation corridors and rural access routes.
