Ogden Townhouse Fire Destroys Unit, Damages Others

Caroline Raffetto

A fire that broke out early Sunday morning destroyed a townhouse unit under construction in Ogden, Utah, and caused significant damage to adjacent units.

According to the Ogden City Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to the 400 West block of 12th Street at 12:37 a.m. “When firefighters arrived on scene, they found flames and smoke coming from an interior townhouse,” officials said. Images from the scene show the severity of the blaze, with the roof of one unit completely collapsed and the roof of a neighboring unit partially caved in.

Fire Chief Michael Slater confirmed in a press release that crews were able to get water onto the structure quickly, which helped prevent the fire from spreading further down the row. “Crews were able to get water onto the structure quickly, saving several other units,” Slater said.

At the time of the fire, the townhouses were still under construction and had not yet been occupied, which likely prevented any injuries. Nearly two dozen firefighters responded to the incident, with assistance from the Weber Fire District to help contain the flames and secure the surrounding area.

The estimated damage from the fire is about $1.6 million, highlighting the costly setback for the ongoing residential development project.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, and fire officials are working to determine whether construction equipment, electrical faults, or other factors may have sparked the blaze.

The fire comes at a time when Ogden and surrounding communities are experiencing a surge in residential development to meet housing demand. Local developers and city planners will likely assess safety measures and review site security to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the investigation continues, officials are reminding residents and developers to ensure proper safety protocols are followed at construction sites, especially during the hot and dry summer months when fire risk is heightened.

No injuries were reported, and no nearby homes were evacuated during the response. The Ogden City Fire Department has not provided a timeline for when cleanup and reconstruction might begin.

Anyone with information about the fire is urged to contact the Ogden City Fire Marshal’s Office.
