Plainfield Ave. Road Work Begins for Safety, Mobility Upgrades

A major resurfacing and infrastructure improvement effort is now underway along a stretch of Plainfield Avenue in Plainfield Township, Michigan, launching what will be a months-long construction project aimed at improving both traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has started work on a $4.6 million initiative that will affect about 2.7 miles of roadway—from just south of I-96 in Grand Rapids to slightly north of Airway Street in Plainfield Township. In addition to resurfacing the heavily traveled corridor and associated highway ramps, the project includes the installation of four new median islands, sidewalk enhancements, and landscaping upgrades that include new trees.

The work officially kicked off Tuesday and is scheduled to continue through late November. Motorists can expect daytime lane reductions, periodic ramp closures, and full overnight road closures in some sections. According to officials, traffic will be rerouted using 4 Mile and Coit Avenues when full closures are in place.

To minimize disruptions during the school year, Plainfield Township officials noted that the construction of median islands is not scheduled to begin until after school lets out for summer break. Two median islands will be constructed near Woodworth Avenue, close to the Meijer store, and another pair near Jupiter Avenue, close to Lowe’s. The new medians are designed with pedestrian safety in mind—some will include mid-crossing refuge zones for walkers.
The work is part of a broader infrastructure plan known as Reimagine Plainfield, a collaboration between MDOT, the Kent County Road Commission, and Plainfield Township. The goal is to make the corridor more efficient for drivers while also making it safer and more accommodating for pedestrians and cyclists.
Officials say the upgrades are not just cosmetic but strategic, based on data and community input aimed at improving transportation in one of the township’s most active corridors.
“This project reflects the community’s long-term vision for a safer and more walkable Plainfield Avenue,” MDOT officials said in a release. “We're balancing the needs of daily commuters with those of pedestrians, cyclists, and residents.”
The Reimagine Plainfield plan was developed through a public engagement process that involved local stakeholders, businesses, and township officials. It is part of a growing trend across the state—and nationally—where infrastructure dollars are being used to modernize older roads in ways that promote multi-modal transportation.
In addition to improving walkability and traffic efficiency, officials say the project is expected to reduce vehicle crashes in a corridor known for congestion and inconsistent traffic patterns.
Construction crews will work throughout the summer and into the fall, and drivers are advised to use caution when traveling through the work zone. Regular updates will be provided through township and MDOT communication channels.
