Platte City Woman Seriously Injured After Crashing into I-29 Construction Zone

A 63-year-old woman from Platte City was seriously injured late Thursday night after driving her SUV into an active construction zone on Interstate 29 in Platte County, Missouri.
The incident happened just after 9 p.m., according to crash logs from the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP). The woman, driving a 2016 Ford Flex, was headed northbound on I-29 when she veered into the far right lane, entering an area that had been marked off for ongoing roadwork. The location of the crash was just south of Mexico City Avenue.

Authorities say the construction zone had warning signage in place, but despite that, the vehicle entered the area where a section of the roadway had recently been removed by construction crews. MSHP reports that the Ford Flex first struck a pile of concrete before plunging into a hole where the road had been excavated.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, and the woman was transported to Liberty Hospital with serious injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
This stretch of I-29 has been undergoing a series of repairs and upgrades aimed at improving the roadway's long-term condition. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has urged drivers to stay alert and heed signage in active work zones, where reduced speed limits and lane closures are often in effect.
While Thursday night's crash remains under investigation, incidents like this underscore the risks both drivers and construction crews face when safety protocols are ignored or overlooked. Missouri has seen a number of serious crashes in construction zones in recent years, prompting statewide campaigns such as “Work Zone Awareness Week” to remind drivers to slow down and stay cautious.
Officials have not released the identity of the woman at this time. MSHP is expected to provide more details as the investigation progresses.
