Procore Names First New CEO in Over 20 Years as Founder Steps Back

CARPINTERIA, Calif. — Procore Technologies, one of the world’s leading construction technology companies, has announced its first new chief executive officer in more than two decades. Founder and CEO Tooey Courtemanche will step aside from daily operations in November, handing leadership to seasoned technology executive Ajei Gopal.

According to the company’s announcement, Gopal is set to officially assume the role on Nov. 10, following Procore’s third-quarter earnings release. Courtemanche will transition into his new position as chair of the board of directors, continuing to guide the company’s long-term vision.

Gopal brings more than 35 years of leadership experience in enterprise technology. Most recently, he served as CEO of Ansys from 2017 to 2025, where he oversaw explosive growth — tripling revenue, nearly quadrupling market value, and securing spots on the S&P 500 and NASDAQ 100. His background also includes leadership roles at Hewlett-Packard, CA Technologies, and Symantec, as well as serving as an operating partner at private equity firm Silver Lake.

Courtemanche founded Procore in 2002 after frustrations with building his own home highlighted inefficiencies in project management. Under his leadership, Procore became a dominant force in the construction technology (contech) sector, helping an industry once dependent on paper workflows migrate into digital, cloud-based systems. The company went public in 2021 and has since grown into one of the most recognized platforms in construction management.

The leadership change comes at a pivotal time for the construction industry, where firms are not only adapting to new digital tools but also rapidly exploring the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in design, scheduling, and project oversight. Procore, known for its mission-driven approach to software, sees Gopal’s appointment as a way to scale further and capture the evolving needs of builders worldwide.

“Procore does more than build software — we’re a mission-driven platform empowering people to build the places that shape our world,” Courtemanche said. “Ajei’s experience leading a vertical software company to billions in revenue uniquely positions him to help us scale and capture the opportunity ahead.”

The announcement underscores Procore’s focus on maintaining innovation while strengthening its leadership bench. Industry observers note that Gopal’s appointment reflects Procore’s ambition to cement its role as the go-to technology partner for contractors, developers, and owners as construction becomes increasingly digitized.

With Courtemanche continuing to influence strategy as board chair, the move signals continuity with a renewed push for global expansion and deeper integration of cutting-edge tools in construction project delivery.
