Roadway modernization projects continue to reshape transportation corridors across fast-growing metropolitan areas, with agencies investing in infrastructure that improves accessibility, safety, and mobility. In Arizona's East Valley, Pulice is completing a major corridor upgrade designed to accommodate increasing traffic and surrounding urban development.

Roadway Modernization Along Apache Trail

Pulice, a FlatironDragados company, is nearing substantial completion of the US60x Apache Trail improvement project in Mesa, Arizona. The Arizona Department of Transportation awarded the approximately $44 million contract to upgrade a five-mile section of Apache Trail extending from Sossaman Road to Meridian Road.

The project was developed to modernize an aging transportation corridor that has experienced significant development as the East Valley continues to expand.

Construction activities included new sidewalks, drainage system upgrades, roadway lighting, traffic signal improvements, driveway construction, and infrastructure modifications to improve compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Maintaining Access During Construction

A significant portion of the project involved constructing nearly 260 driveways serving residential and commercial properties along the corridor.

Because Apache Trail remained open to motorists during construction, project teams coordinated work to maintain access for businesses, residents, and local traffic while completing improvements. The contractor also worked with the Arizona Department of Transportation and project stakeholders to address field design modifications that arose during construction.

Following a final punch list inspection involving ADOT, the Maricopa County Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, and other stakeholders, crews are completing pavement striping and remaining closeout activities.

Why It Matters

Transportation corridor improvements remain a priority for rapidly growing regions where increasing development places greater demand on existing infrastructure. For construction owners, public agencies, and contractors, the Apache Trail project demonstrates the importance of phased construction, stakeholder coordination, and accessibility upgrades while maintaining traffic operations on active roadways.
