Roanoke to Launch Virginia's First In-River Whitewater Park in 2025

ROANOKE, Va. – Roanoke is set to begin construction on Virginia’s first in-river whitewater park in 2025, marking a significant milestone for the city and its outdoor recreation scene. The park, located near Wasena Park, is slated to be completed by late 2026.
The City of Roanoke has been working on the whitewater park project since 2022, with the goal of creating a unique recreational space that combines the natural beauty of the river with exciting water sports. The city has secured $5.6 million in funding for the park, primarily from the American Rescue Plan Act, which has provided much-needed financial support to enhance public spaces and recreational opportunities.
Katie Slusher, the City of Roanoke Park Project Manager, shared her excitement about the project’s potential: “This project will make sports like kayaking more visible and approachable for residents right in the middle of the city. It’s designed to be inclusive and accessible, offering everyone a chance to engage with the river, whether they’re honing new paddling skills or enjoying a quiet day by the water.” This sentiment reflects the park's vision of fostering a welcoming environment for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels and encouraging locals to take advantage of the river's natural resources.
The whitewater park will feature multiple in-river features designed to cater to a variety of water sports, including kayaking and rafting. It will be an exciting destination for both residents and visitors, offering not only thrill-seekers but also families and individuals seeking a peaceful riverside experience. The city’s plan includes designated spaces for both recreational and competitive paddlers, with features that allow for skill-building and outdoor enjoyment.
Construction for the project is officially set to begin in spring 2025, with the grand opening expected by late 2026. The park is expected to boost tourism, bring economic benefits to the city, and provide a recreational haven right in the heart of Roanoke. It will also serve as a key part of the city’s broader strategy to revitalize its riverfront areas and make them more accessible to the public.
While the project’s funding is secure for the primary features, Roanoke officials have noted that two additional in-river features are part of the park’s long-term vision but have not yet been funded. These additional features would further enhance the park's appeal and offer more opportunities for water-based activities. City staff have indicated that they are actively pursuing grants and other funding options to make these future expansions possible.
Slusher added, “This has been a highly anticipated addition to our community, and we’ve covered multiple updates on the project prior to this. The excitement is building as we get closer to bringing this dream to life.” With its focus on inclusivity, accessibility, and recreational variety, Roanoke’s whitewater park is poised to become a cherished addition to the city’s landscape, offering a perfect blend of outdoor adventure and relaxation.
As construction progresses, the City of Roanoke plans to keep the community updated and engaged, ensuring that the park meets the needs and expectations of both residents and visitors.
