RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Sanford Health announced a $2 million donation to the Children’s Home Society of South Dakota to support construction and programs at their new Rapid City facility.
“Sanford Health really resonated with the residential care for kids that are four to 14,” Children’s Home Society Chief Philanthropy Officer Jon Mammenga said. “It’s one of the things that they wanted to support. So, this investment is really going to help us with the renovation of the facility to make that program the best that it can be.”

The Children’s Home Society announced their move from a facility south of Rockerville to the former National American University building in 2023.
Construction at the Rapid City site continues, and Mammenga says he expects the new facility to be fully up-and-running by the end of 2026.
Leaders with the nonprofit say the funding will be used not only for bricks-and-mortar renovations but also to strengthen therapeutic and educational programming. The Rapid City location will provide residential treatment, counseling space, and family engagement areas designed to create a more home-like environment for children facing trauma, behavioral challenges, and unstable living situations.
The relocation to Rapid City marks one of the most significant transitions in the organization’s 130-year history. The former National American University building offers more square footage and a layout better suited for modern child-care standards than the aging Rockerville campus. Renovations include upgraded bedrooms, sensory rooms, medical offices, and outdoor recreation areas.
Sanford Health officials said the partnership reflects their broader commitment to community health beyond hospital walls. By supporting residential care, the health system aims to address mental and behavioral health needs earlier in life, reducing long-term crises.
South Dakota providers report rising demand for intensive services for children dealing with abuse, neglect, and mental health disorders. The Children’s Home Society currently serves hundreds of families each year through residential care, foster services, and prevention programs. Administrators say the new facility will allow them to expand capacity and reduce waitlists across western South Dakota.
The $2 million gift adds momentum to a broader capital campaign that includes contributions from local businesses, foundations, and individual donors. City leaders have praised the collaboration, noting that the project will bring specialized jobs to Rapid City and keep vulnerable children closer to their families instead of being placed out of region.
With construction crews now focused on interior build-outs, Mammenga said the organization is finalizing program design and staffing plans. The goal is to begin phased openings in early 2026, leading to full operations by year’s end.
Community members interested in supporting the project can participate through volunteer opportunities and additional donations coordinated by the Children’s Home Society.
