Shawmut Design and Construction has strengthened its West Coast footprint with the opening of a permanent office in San Diego, signaling a strategic push into one of the nation’s fastest-growing life sciences markets.

The $2.3 billion construction management firm announced it has established a long-term base in the University Town Center area, reinforcing its commitment to Southern California after more than two decades of project work in the region.
Although the new office marks a formal expansion, Shawmut is no newcomer to the San Diego market. The firm has been active in the region since 2003, delivering complex, high-profile projects across multiple sectors.
Its portfolio includes collaborations with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, where it completed several fast-track renovations, including upgrades to the Western Metal Supply Co. Building and the Cutwater Agave Club. The company also recently handled renovations at the Sheraton San Diego Resort.
“This is not a new market for Shawmut. We have been delivering complex projects in San Diego for more than 20 years,” said Greg Skalaski. “A permanent presence allows us to better serve clients in a region defined by world-class life sciences research, healthcare innovation, leading higher education systems, and a deep talent pool. San Diego aligns directly with our long-term strategy to grow in markets that demand technical expertise and strong local leadership.”
The new San Diego location is part of a broader national growth strategy aimed at expanding Shawmut’s reach in technically demanding sectors such as life sciences, healthcare and higher education.
San Diego has emerged as a key hub for biotechnology and medical research, making it an attractive market for construction firms specializing in complex, highly regulated environments. By establishing a permanent office, Shawmut aims to deepen relationships with existing clients while pursuing new opportunities in the region.
Beyond its regional expansion, Shawmut continues to grow nationally through investments in leadership, new market entry and diversification into sectors such as mission-critical infrastructure.
As a 100% employee-owned company, Shawmut emphasizes a culture of accountability and innovation, with more than 80% of its business coming from repeat clients. This strong client retention has been a key driver of its steady growth across the U.S.
