Structural Work Advances at Collin College’s Wylie Campus

Expanding technical education capacity is a priority for communities seeking to meet demand for skilled workers across construction, manufacturing and other industries. Skanska USA Building has reached the structural topping-out milestone for a new workforce education centre at Collin College’s Wylie Campus in Wylie, Texas.

The milestone marks the placement of the building’s final structural steel beam. The project will add 66,309 square feet of instructional space designed to support hands-on training and expand the college’s capacity to serve students in Collin County.

Technical Laboratories and Trade Training Spaces

The Wylie Campus Work Center will contain specialised laboratories, general classrooms, faculty offices and a dedicated welding shop. Plans also include an unconditioned outdoor fabrication materials yard and unfinished space that can accommodate future instructional programmes.

Initial training areas will include welding, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), electronic engineering and health professions. Additional disciplines may be introduced as the college develops its programme offerings.

The facility is intended to accommodate regional population growth and provide instructional environments for students pursuing technical careers. Its combination of classroom space and specialised training areas will support practical education across multiple fields.

Stantec is the architect for the new facility, continuing its involvement from the original Wylie Campus development. Skanska also served as construction manager for the original campus, which comprised six buildings totalling 340,000 square feet on a 96-acre site.

Summer 2027 Completion Target

Construction is expected to finish in summer 2027. The new centre represents a further phase of development at the Wylie Campus, which opened in 2020 as part of Collin College’s regional education network.

Skanska has also worked on Collin College facilities in McKinney, Plano and Frisco. The latest project extends that construction relationship through an additional investment in technical education infrastructure.

Why It Matters for Construction and Workforce Development

The project adds specialised instructional space for trades and technical disciplines that support construction and other regional industries. For contractors and employers, expanded access to technical education facilities can strengthen the local foundation for developing job-ready skills.

The facility also illustrates how colleges are incorporating dedicated laboratory, workshop and fabrication spaces into campus development. Its planned summer 2027 completion will mark the next step in Collin College’s effort to expand workforce education capacity in the growing North Texas region.
