National recognition has been awarded to a completed North Carolina highway project that required nearly eight years of coordinated design, construction and planning. The Fayetteville Outer Loop’s I-295 segment received a National Award of Merit in the Transportation category from the Design-Build Institute of America.
The recognized portion of the Fayetteville Outer Loop spans approximately six miles between Camden Road in Cumberland County and I-95 in Robeson County.
STV served as lead designer, working with the Balfour Beatty/Branch Civil joint venture and the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The design-build program involved coordination among the design, construction and transportation agency teams throughout planning, design and construction.
STV's scope included roadway and structural design, environmental permitting support, geotechnical coordination, right-of-way acquisition and intelligent transportation systems design.
The completed connection advances North Carolina's long-running effort to establish a continuous interstate loop around Fayetteville.
The project required coordination across multiple disciplines and organizations during its nearly eight-year delivery period. The completed route provides a high-capacity connection around Fayetteville and direct access to I-95.
The new connection is intended to improve travel reliability for motorists and freight operators while providing an additional transportation route through southeastern North Carolina.
The project previously received regional recognition from the DBIA Southeast Region before receiving the national Transportation Award of Merit.
The Fayetteville Outer Loop demonstrates the scale of coordination required to deliver major highway infrastructure through a design-build approach. Its completion provides additional interstate connectivity and transportation capacity in southeastern North Carolina.
For transportation owners and contractors, the project also highlights the role of integrated roadway, structural, environmental, geotechnical and technology-related work in delivering large corridor improvements.
