Improving accessibility within aging transit systems remains a major infrastructure priority as transportation agencies modernize stations to meet current mobility standards. STV has supported the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in advancing accessibility upgrades at two key New York City subway locations, helping expand access for riders across the system.
The improvements include the completion of accessibility upgrades at the Church Avenue station in Brooklyn and the installation of new elevators at the 34th Street-Penn Station subway complex in Manhattan.
The work is part of a broader MTA initiative focused on improving station access through elevator installations, facility upgrades and system modernization efforts.
The Church Avenue station serving the B and Q subway lines has reached full accessibility following a series of infrastructure improvements.
The project included construction of a new entrance on East 18th Street, installation of two elevators, construction of two new stairways and upgrades to the station’s fare control area. The station also received a transfer bridge equipped with customer information technology.
Additional improvements included ADA-compliant raised boarding areas and tactile platform edge warning strips designed to improve accessibility and passenger safety.
STV supported the project through construction management, project management and design compliance services.
STV also supported accessibility improvements at the 34th Street-Penn Station subway complex, one of the city’s busiest transit locations.
The project delivered two new elevators serving the A, C and E subway lines, expanding accessible travel options for passengers using the station.
The work required coordination within an active transit environment while maintaining subway operations and minimizing impacts on riders.
The Church Avenue and 34th Street-Penn Station improvements are included within an MTA design-build-finance-maintain (DBFM) program aimed at upgrading 34 elevators across 13 subway stations throughout New York City.
STV is supporting the program on behalf of MTA Construction & Development, working alongside project partners to deliver accessibility improvements across the subway network.
