The growing demand for water and wastewater infrastructure is increasing the need for specialized electrical and controls expertise across the construction sector. To strengthen its ability to deliver complex treatment facility projects, Sundt Construction has acquired Industrial Power Solutions (IPS), an electrical contractor based in Phoenix.
The transaction expands Sundt's self-perform capabilities while adding specialized expertise in instrumentation, controls, and electrical systems commonly required on water and wastewater projects.
IPS has established its business around electrical construction services for water and wastewater treatment facilities. The acquisition adds experienced electricians, controls specialists, and instrumentation professionals to Sundt's workforce, significantly increasing the contractor's in-house electrical resources.
Electrical and controls systems represent a substantial portion of treatment plant construction budgets and are often among the most technically demanding components of project delivery. By integrating IPS into its operations, Sundt gains additional capability to manage those systems directly.
The acquisition also includes IPS's manufacturing operations, which produce control panels and instrumentation-related equipment used in treatment facilities.
Water and wastewater owners across the United States continue to invest in treatment plant upgrades, capacity expansions, and system modernization projects. These projects frequently require specialized electrical contractors with experience in process controls, automation systems, and plant instrumentation.
Industry competition for skilled electrical contractors has intensified as labor demand increases across sectors such as data centers, advanced manufacturing, and energy projects. Expanding in-house electrical capabilities may help contractors address workforce constraints while maintaining greater control over project schedules and coordination.
Sundt indicated that IPS's expertise aligns closely with its existing water and wastewater construction operations and client base.
More than 200 IPS employees are now participating in Sundt's employee stock ownership plan, extending employee ownership benefits to the acquired workforce.
Despite the acquisition, IPS will continue operating as an independent subsidiary and will remain available to perform work for a range of general contractors and project teams. Maintaining that structure allows IPS to continue pursuing opportunities throughout the market while expanding its access to larger and longer-duration projects.
For municipal owners, utilities, developers, and contractors involved in water infrastructure projects, access to specialized electrical and controls expertise can significantly influence project delivery. Sundt's acquisition of IPS expands its ability to self-perform critical portions of treatment plant construction while adding manufacturing, instrumentation, and controls capabilities that support increasingly complex water and wastewater facilities.
