NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Tennessee State University (TSU) is moving forward with a transformative project that will reshape the future of its engineering program: a $50 million, 70,000-square-foot engineering facility designed to meet the growing demands of industry, research, and higher education.

Approved by the Tennessee State Building Commission on August 15, the new facility is being hailed as a cornerstone for TSU’s academic and research growth. University leaders say the project underscores a bold commitment to innovation, sustainability, and workforce development.
“This new engineering building is the first step in elevating Tennessee State University’s engineering program to meet the demands of industry and the state of Tennessee,” said Will Radford, Assistant Vice President of Planning, Design, and Construction. “By establishing new partnerships and providing modern facilities, we are positioning TSU engineering students to not only keep pace but to set standards in the industry.”
The building will include a wide range of advanced resources:
- More than 30 specialized teaching and research labs
- A Future Energy Lab focused on renewable power and grid innovations
- A Drone Flight and Air Traffic Lab to support unmanned aerial systems research
- Modern classrooms and collaborative computer labs designed for hands-on learning
The project also reflects TSU’s role in preparing a diverse, highly skilled STEM workforce. By integrating sustainability into design and function, the new facility is expected to serve as both a teaching tool and a research hub.

Construction is scheduled to begin later this year, with completion set for summer 2027. Once finished, the engineering facility will not only expand TSU’s research capabilities but also strengthen partnerships with Tennessee industries in aerospace, energy, advanced manufacturing, and transportation.
TSU officials emphasized that the facility will help attract new talent and faculty, create opportunities for students to work on cutting-edge projects, and better position the university as a leader in engineering education among historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
The announcement comes at a time when demand for engineers is rising nationwide, and Tennessee’s own economy is seeing rapid growth in sectors like automotive technology, renewable energy, and logistics. University leaders said the project is aligned with state goals to expand workforce readiness in these high-demand fields.
When complete, the facility will stand as a signature addition to the Nashville campus, symbolizing TSU’s forward-looking vision and long-standing commitment to excellence in education.
