Turner Construction is expanding its portfolio beyond the realm of concrete and steel, taking on a heartwarming project that combines construction expertise with a touch of compassion. The company has been selected to build a state-of-the-art training center for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides in Oakville, Ontario.
The $43.8 million facility, spanning 89,000 square feet, will be a hub for training service dogs for individuals with disabilities. With classrooms, training rooms, and accommodations for clients, the center will be a vital resource for the community. The Lions Foundation’s seven programs, ranging from canine vision to diabetes alert, rely on these dedicated dogs to transform lives.
“This facility will save so many lives,” said Stuart Smith, vice president and general manager at Turner. “We’re building a world-class facility that will directly benefit hundreds of Canadians with special needs every year.” Smith also highlighted the facility's role in supporting families as they learn to work with their new guide dogs.
Beyond the physical construction, Turner's commitment to the project extends to the heart of the organization. The team has taken on the responsibility of fostering a puppy, aptly named Turner, as she grows into a future service dog. Exposing the puppy to the bustling construction environment is an innovative approach to socialization and desensitization, preparing her for the challenges and distractions she may encounter in the real world.
This project exemplifies the potential for the construction industry to go beyond building structures and contribute to the betterment of society. By combining skilled craftsmanship with a compassionate spirit, Turner Construction is leaving a lasting legacy.
