Portland, Ore. – Turner Construction Company has broken ground on a $33 million expansion and renovation project at Oregon Health & Science University’s (OHSU) Mark O. Hatfield Research Center, a facility that houses both research functions and emergency medical services. The project will modernize the pediatric wing and emergency department, ensuring OHSU can continue to meet the evolving healthcare needs of patients across the region.

Construction began earlier this month and is being delivered in carefully sequenced phases designed to minimize disruptions. Emergency and pediatric services will remain available throughout the project, with Turner coordinating closely with OHSU medical staff to protect patient access.

“We are honored to partner with Oregon Health & Science University on this expansion,” said Andrew Stanton, Project Manager at Turner Construction Company. “This project will create a modern, patient-centered emergency care environment while ensuring that life-saving services continue without interruption during construction.”

Meeting Rising Demand for Care

The Hatfield Research Center, located on OHSU’s Marquam Hill campus, is a cornerstone of Portland’s medical landscape. With the region’s growing population and increased demand for specialized pediatric and emergency care, OHSU leaders emphasized that the project is not just a renovation but an investment in Oregon’s long-term health infrastructure.

The expansion will feature:

  • New patient rooms and expanded triage areas to handle higher patient volumes.
  • Dedicated pediatric care spaces with family-friendly design elements.
  • Modernized treatment rooms and trauma bays equipped for advanced medical technology.
  • Sustainable building systems that align with OHSU’s climate and energy goals.

Economic and Community Impact

The $33 million investment also supports Portland’s economy, generating construction jobs and strengthening partnerships with local subcontractors and suppliers. Turner’s team is working with OHSU to ensure the project reflects the university’s values of sustainability, patient-centered design, and equitable community investment.

Long-Term Vision

Completion is scheduled for 2028, aligning with OHSU’s broader capital planning and expansion strategy. Once finished, the facility will allow OHSU to accommodate surges in emergency cases, reduce wait times, and provide families with a more comfortable care environment.

The project underscores OHSU’s role as Oregon’s only academic health center and a leader in innovation, research, and patient care. By strengthening its pediatric and emergency services, OHSU aims to provide a blueprint for integrating cutting-edge research with patient treatment in a setting that prioritizes accessibility and compassion.
