DUCHESNE COUNTY (May 22, 2025) — The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has resumed major construction activities along U.S. Highway 191 through Indian Canyon, a vital transportation corridor linking the communities of Helper and Duchesne. As crews ramp up work along the mountainous 45-mile stretch, UDOT is inviting the public to learn more about the long-term improvements through two upcoming open houses in early June.
The meetings are designed to provide residents, travelers, and stakeholders with an opportunity to meet the project contractor and UDOT team, ask questions, and get a better understanding of the timeline, scope, and expected traffic impacts.

What the Project Includes
Work will be spread across the entire 45-mile corridor and will involve a wide range of infrastructure improvements aimed at modernizing the roadway and improving safety for all users. These include:
- Construction of new passing lanes to improve traffic flow and reduce delays on steep grades
- Widening of select roadway segments and shoulder areas for better driver visibility and safer pull-off zones
- Expansion of chain-up areas to help commercial vehicles prepare for winter driving conditions
- Intersection improvements at key access points
- Upgrades to drainage systems to prevent road erosion and water-related damage
- Installation of new or upgraded guardrail systems to improve crash protection in high-risk areas
According to UDOT, the work is expected to continue through Fall 2026, with multiple crews working simultaneously along different segments of the route to maximize progress while minimizing disruptions.
How to Stay Informed
Community members who cannot attend the open houses in person can still review materials and sign up for project updates online. “Open-house materials and email sign-up information will also be made available on the project website udotinput.utah.gov/us191indiancanyon.”
For additional questions, UDOT encourages the public to reach out directly. “Further inquiry can be directed to the project team by calling 435-264-3448, or by email at us191indiancanyon@utah.gov.”
Drivers are also encouraged to check real-time travel conditions through the UDOT Traffic website and mobile app at udottraffic.utah.gov, which provides construction alerts, weather-related closures, and detour information.
The Indian Canyon corridor is a critical east-west route for oil and gas, agriculture, tourism, and local commuters. With the improvements now underway, UDOT is aiming to significantly improve the road’s functionality, safety, and resilience in the face of growing traffic demands and changing weather patterns.
