TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama has started nearly 65 construction projects across its campus this summer, launching one of the institution’s busiest seasonal infrastructure and development programs in recent years.

University officials said the work includes road and sidewalk improvements, utility upgrades, safety enhancements and several major capital projects designed to modernize the campus and improve traffic flow before students return for the fall semester.
“I wouldn’t say it’s the busiest summer we’ve had, but it’s been one of the busiest,” UA Campus Development Communications Manager Jennifer Sumners said.
The construction activity is concentrated primarily around Bryant-Denny Stadium and major campus corridors, where drivers and pedestrians are encountering temporary detours, caution barriers and lane closures.
University Boulevard, one of the main thoroughfares connecting the campus to the Strip entertainment district and stadium area, will be closed between Colonial Drive and Sixth Avenue while crews install new sewer and stormwater infrastructure.
According to university officials, the utility work addresses long-standing drainage concerns in that section of campus.
“That stretch of road actually did not have any storm sewer previously, so we’d get some flooding by buildings and the sidewalks,” Sumners said.
The university is timing the projects to coincide with reduced summer traffic in an effort to minimize disruptions for students, faculty and visitors.
“Anything that we have that impacts travel, we keep confined during the summertime,” Sumners said.
UA student Jackson Pruitt, who is taking summer classes, said the work has created noticeable changes around campus, although it has not significantly impacted his daily routine.
“I’m not used to seeing this type of work on campus,” Pruitt said.
Pruitt added that completing the projects during the summer months makes sense because of lighter pedestrian traffic.
“Doing this over the summer when there is not a lot of foot traffic, I think, is very good,” he said.
In addition to underground utility improvements, the university is also installing new security features around the Quad and other heavily traveled areas as part of broader campus safety and accessibility initiatives.
Alongside infrastructure work, UA is advancing several large-scale construction and renovation projects that are expected to reshape key portions of the campus over the next several years.
Among the major developments underway are the new athletic training facility near Coleman Coliseum, the Student Well-Being Hub and the Smith Family Performing Arts Center.

University officials said the combined value of ongoing summer construction and capital projects totals approximately $575 million.
The university has also published an interactive online map outlining road closures, detours and active work zones to help students and visitors navigate campus throughout the summer construction season.
Officials expect many of the roadway and utility projects to wrap up before the start of the fall semester, while several of the larger capital developments will continue beyond summer.
The extensive construction push reflects continued investment in campus infrastructure, student services and long-term growth at the University of Alabama as enrollment and facility demands continue to rise.
