Virginia’s First Buc-ee’s to Open June 30 in Rockingham County

Construction is wrapping up on Virginia’s first Buc-ee’s, with the Texas-based chain preparing to open its Rockingham County location on June 30. The massive travel center, located just off Interstate 81 at Exit 240 in Mount Crawford, is a significant addition to the region’s retail landscape and sits only about two hours from most areas in Montgomery County. A newly released video highlights the latest construction progress as the site nears completion.
Buc-ee’s, long known in the South for its oversized convenience stores and cult following, had previously set a target date of June 30 for the grand opening. That timeline has now been confirmed by FOX Business, which reports that the Mount Crawford store will officially open its doors to the public on that day.

This location marks Buc-ee’s first foray into the Old Dominion, as the company continues its eastward expansion from its Texas roots. “Buc-ee’s Rockingham County will span 74,000 square feet and feature 120 fueling positions. Favorites such as Texas barbecue, homemade fudge, kolaches, Beaver Nuggets, jerky, and fresh pastries will be on offer. Visitors can expect thousands of snack, meal, and drink options, along with award-winning restrooms, affordable gas, quality products, and the excellent service that has won over millions in the South for more than 40 years,” the company stated.
Buc-ee’s is best known for its massive footprint and unique blend of Southern charm and convenience. It has built a loyal following with an emphasis on cleanliness, food quality, and wide product variety. The Rockingham County site is expected to draw travelers from along the I-81 corridor as well as curious first-time visitors eager to experience what many describe as “the Disneyland of gas stations.”
More Virginia Locations on the Way
While the Mount Crawford site is nearing completion, Buc-ee’s has additional plans for expansion throughout the state. A second Virginia location was originally announced in New Kent County in 2022 and was slated to open in 2023. However, those plans have since been delayed. The company now expects the New Kent store to open in 2027.
Meanwhile, a third Buc-ee’s is in the early stages of planning for Stafford County, part of Northern Virginia's outer suburbs. According to Potomac Local, the company has submitted a request to rezone nearly 35 acres of land near the intersection of Courthouse Road (Route 630) and Austin Ridge Drive, just east of I-95 Exit 140. This future location would mirror the Mount Crawford store in size and offerings.
The proposed Stafford facility would include a 74,000-square-foot travel center, 120 gas pumps, and infrastructure to support up to 24 electric vehicle charging stations—highlighting Buc-ee’s plans to serve both traditional and EV drivers.
Eyes on Maryland?
As Buc-ee’s accelerates its growth across the Mid-Atlantic, speculation continues to swirl about a possible location in neighboring Maryland. Some reports have suggested a new site near Hagerstown, along the I-81 corridor. However, Buc-ee’s has dispelled those rumors, stating clearly that it has “no plans for that site at this time.”
For now, Buc-ee’s fans in Maryland may need to make the drive across state lines to Mount Crawford—or wait to see if future announcements bring the iconic beaver mascot closer to home.
With four locations planned across Virginia—including sites in Rockingham County, New Kent County, Stafford County, and a yet-unannounced fourth site—Buc-ee’s expansion represents one of the largest retail introductions in the commonwealth in recent years. The company's emphasis on scale, service, and unique offerings may signal a shift in how East Coast travelers think about highway stops.
