FEDERAL HEIGHTS, Colo. — One of Colorado’s most beloved summer destinations is getting a major upgrade. Water World, the state’s largest water park, has officially begun construction on a sweeping redevelopment following the closure of its longtime Calypso Cove section earlier this year.

The park, located just north of Denver, retired the Calypso Cove area in August after more than four decades of operation. The section, which included fan-favorite attractions such as Screamin’ Mimi, Tortuga Run, Pirates Plunge, and Wally World, closed following its final splash day at the end of the 2025 summer season.

In a statement, park officials confirmed that Calypso Cove will not just be replaced, but completely reimagined.

“Calypso Cove will be retired and re-imagined to make way for an exciting new chapter at Water World,” said a park statement. “These changes will bring fresh attractions and modern amenities that will better serve families, groups, and guests of all ages for years to come. We know how much Calypso Cove means to our community, and that saying goodbye is never easy.”

The renovation marks one of the largest single-area investments in the park’s history. Construction crews began work this offseason to clear and redevelop the 10-acre area, which will feature next-generation attractions, upgraded guest amenities, and expanded dining and shaded lounge areas designed to enhance visitor comfort.

Park officials have not yet revealed specific details about the new rides or experiences but hinted that the redesigned area will introduce cutting-edge water attractions that integrate new technology, immersive themes, and interactive play zones.

Water World’s redevelopment project comes as part of a broader push among U.S. water parks to modernize legacy attractions and improve accessibility and guest experience. With over 50 rides and attractions spanning 70 acres, Water World consistently ranks among the largest and most visited water parks in the nation, drawing families from across Colorado and surrounding states.

The park plans to debut the new Calypso Cove replacement in Memorial Day weekend 2026, marking the start of what officials call a “new era” for Water World.

Community members and longtime guests have expressed both nostalgia and excitement. For many, Calypso Cove represented decades of summer memories, from childhood adventures to family reunions. However, the park’s management emphasized that the new expansion aims to honor that legacy while introducing fresh experiences for future generations.

The upcoming redesign is expected to include eco-friendly infrastructure, improved accessibility, and water-saving technologies — aligning with regional sustainability goals. Local officials in Federal Heights have praised the project as an investment that supports both tourism and local employment during construction and beyond.

When the gates reopen in 2026, Water World hopes to deliver a renewed destination that blends nostalgia with innovation, ensuring the park continues to make a splash for another 40 years.
