Webcor Expands into Data Center Market with GCON Acquisition

Construction Owners Editorial Team

SAN FRANCISCO — Webcor, one of California’s leading construction firms, is making a major move into the data center and advanced technology construction markets through its newly announced acquisition of GCON, a Phoenix-based builder with a strong presence in mission-critical, semiconductor, and data infrastructure projects across 10 states.

The deal, unveiled on October 17, marks a significant step in Webcor’s long-term strategy to diversify and strengthen its portfolio in some of the fastest-growing sectors in construction. While financial details remain undisclosed, the transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approval.

Under the agreement, GCON will continue operating independently under its current name, leadership, and brand identity while benefiting from Webcor’s financial backing and the global strength of its parent company, Japan-based Obayashi Corporation. The company will maintain its Phoenix headquarters and existing team as it integrates with Webcor’s broader national network.

A Strategic Step into the Tech Sector

Webcor’s acquisition comes as demand for data centers, semiconductor plants, and AI infrastructure reaches record levels across the U.S. The construction of large-scale mission-critical facilities has become one of the key drivers of the nation’s commercial construction market, sustaining growth amid slowdowns in other sectors.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Webcor to expand our portfolio and enter previously untapped markets,” said Matt Rossie, president and CEO of Webcor. “GCON brings deep expertise in the technology sector. Together, we’ll be able to pursue new opportunities while respecting each of our unique strengths and capabilities.”

Rossie emphasized that GCON’s established relationships with leading data center and semiconductor clients, combined with Webcor’s national reputation and financial depth, position the partnership for long-term success in emerging markets tied to digital infrastructure and energy efficiency.

GCON’s Continued Growth Path

Founded in Phoenix, GCON has built a strong reputation for delivering mission-critical projects and advanced facilities that support the digital backbone of industries ranging from cloud computing to microelectronics. By aligning with Webcor, the company will gain access to larger, more complex project opportunities and expanded geographic reach.

“We’re thrilled to be launching our strategic relationship with Webcor,” said Mike Godbehere, CEO of GCON. “We’re excited to continue growing and serving our clients with the support of Webcor’s resources and capabilities.”

GCON’s portfolio includes projects across multiple states and sectors, particularly in high-demand areas such as data storage, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable building systems. Its integration with Webcor will allow for shared expertise, stronger supply chain coordination, and enhanced use of technology-driven project management tools.

Industry Context and Broader M&A Momentum

Webcor’s move mirrors a broader trend of consolidation in the construction and engineering sectors, as firms seek to expand their technical capabilities amid increasing specialization in energy, water, and data infrastructure.

Recent examples include Zachry Construction’s acquisition of Crescent Constructors, targeting the growing water infrastructure market, and Buildots’ acquisition of Genda, a workforce and safety management platform aimed at improving efficiency through construction technology.

By entering the mission-critical construction space, Webcor not only strengthens its portfolio but also diversifies its resilience against cyclical downturns in traditional sectors like commercial and residential development.

The acquisition positions Webcor as a growing national player in high-tech, sustainable, and infrastructure-intensive construction, leveraging both GCON’s operational expertise and Obayashi’s global capital reach.
