The “Careers in Construction” event, held in nearby Fitchburg, brought together representatives from Wisconsin’s Building Trades Unions to engage high school students with practical demonstrations and career guidance.

The event allowed students to explore a variety of skilled trades while speaking directly with union members and industry professionals about career pathways, training and job opportunities.

“It’s very important like getting people in young and helping them realize they have a path that isn’t college, even if they want to go and they just don’t know what they are doing,” said Lake Mills student Mason Wollin. “I feel like this is super important to help guide them on a path that might not be as conventional as others.”

Hands-On Exposure to Skilled Trades Careers

Organizers designed the event to provide students with real-world exposure to construction careers, emphasizing the benefits of apprenticeship programs as an alternative or complement to traditional college education.

Through interactive demonstrations, students were able to try out different trades, gaining insight into the daily responsibilities and skills required in the field. Industry representatives highlighted how apprenticeships can lead to stable, high-paying jobs with minimal student debt.

The initiative also aimed to bridge the gap between education and employment by helping students better understand the opportunities available after graduation.

In addition to student engagement, the event offered educators a closer look at workforce demands within the construction industry, enabling them to guide students toward relevant training and career paths.

Contractors and industry groups have increasingly emphasized the need to build a pipeline of skilled workers, particularly as demand rises for infrastructure, commercial and residential projects.

By connecting students with industry professionals early, organizers hope to spark interest in trades careers and ensure a steady supply of qualified workers in the years ahead.

The event underscores the growing recognition that workforce development must start at the high school level, where students are making critical decisions about their futures.

As construction demand continues to grow, initiatives like this are expected to play a key role in shaping the industry’s workforce and ensuring long-term sustainability.
