AECOM Selected as Lead Designer for SR 520 Portage Bay Bridge Replacement Project in Seattle
Seattle, WA (June 20, 2024): – AECOM, a world leader in infrastructure consulting (NYSE: ACM), announced today it will serve as lead designer for the Washington State Department of Transportation's (WSDOT) critical SR 520 Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project. AECOM will be part of a design-build team led by Skanska.
This transformative project aims to improve safety, traffic flow, and connectivity across Lake Washington. Key features include:
- Replacing the existing Portage Bay Bridge with two new, seismically resilient bridges, one for each direction of traffic.
- Constructing a landscaped lid over a section of SR 520, creating nearly three acres of new public green space.
- Enhancing regional mobility by completing planned transit and HOV improvements between Seattle and Redmond.
- Extending the popular SR 520 Trail for bicycles and pedestrians across Portage Bay, connecting it to Seattle's broader trail network.
“We are proud to build upon our longstanding partnership with WSDOT to address critical infrastructure needs in the Puget Sound region,” said Matt Crane, Chief Executive of AECOM’s U.S. West region. “Our proven experience spans all types of highway and bridge projects, including some of the world’s largest design-build endeavors. AECOM is committed to delivering a project that fosters safer travel, improved mobility, and a more livable Seattle community.”
AECOM’s role encompasses the technical design of the new bridges, ensuring they meet the highest seismic safety standards. The firm will also contribute its expertise in designing the landscaped lid, which will not only create new green space but also reconnect neighborhoods previously divided by the highway.
“This project represents a significant investment in Washington’s transportation infrastructure,” said Mark Southwell, Chief Executive of AECOM’s global Transportation business. “Our team brings together a wealth of experience across various disciplines to achieve the project's multifaceted goals. We are committed to delivering a solution that enhances mobility and creates a vibrant public space for the community."
