Wieland North America is committing $500 million to modernize its manufacturing operations.
EAST ALTON – Governor JB Pritzker, along with Wieland Rolled Products North America and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), gathered with local leaders and partners to celebrate the groundbreaking of Wieland's newly modernized East Alton facility. The $500 million investment will safeguard 800 jobs across Illinois, enabling the company to boost its production of copper and copper alloy components vital for electric vehicles (EVs), EV charging stations, and renewable energy systems, all while supporting Illinois' clean energy economy.
"Today, we continue Wieland’s rich history by launching this major expansion—a $500 million investment that will shape the future of Illinois and fuel growth and opportunity in East Alton for years to come," said Governor JB Pritzker. "Beyond creating jobs and stimulating the economy, Wieland has been a community anchor here in East Alton and across Illinois, including in Wheeling and Tinley Park. The good jobs it has provided have allowed families to establish roots and thrive."
Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton also emphasized the importance of this investment: "Wieland's substantial expansion is an investment in East Alton’s future, supporting our shared vision for a clean energy economy. When businesses choose to invest in Illinois, they're selecting a state that values both innovation and working families."
The investment underlines Wieland's long-term commitment to its six Illinois-based facilities and strengthens the state’s advanced manufacturing sector. Governor Pritzker’s visit to Wieland's modern plant in Vöhringen, Germany, alongside CEO Dr. Erwin Mayr, highlighted the global standards that will guide the East Alton facility's upgrades. Wieland operates several other facilities in Illinois, including locations in Carol Stream, Granite City, Montgomery, Tinley Park, and Wheeling.
"Thanks to Governor JB Pritzker and all the officials involved for their support as we embark on this exciting new chapter at our East Alton facility. This transformative expansion is a key milestone for our employees and the local community, positioning us for future success and ensuring we deliver long-term value," said Greg Keown, President, Wieland Rolling & Recycling.
Illinois ranks #2 in the U.S. for corporate relocations and expansions for the third consecutive year, according to Site Selection Magazine. The state saw a 20 percent increase in business expansion and relocation projects, with over 650 companies choosing Illinois for growth.
The modernization of Wieland's East Alton facility will enhance the production of high-quality copper and copper alloy components for electric vehicles, EV charging stations, and renewable energy. A new, state-of-the-art hot rolling mill will be installed, improving operational efficiency and raising the bar for quality and reliability.
"This investment in Wieland’s East Alton plant is a win for southwestern Illinois," said DCEO Director Kristin Richards. "Guided by Illinois’ Economic Growth Plan, we remain committed to supporting advanced manufacturing, an industry that has thrived here for over a century."
The state of Illinois has approved a $231 million incentive package for Wieland, which includes tax benefits through the REV program amounting to $172 million over 30 years. Additional benefits include infrastructure funding for a new electricity substation, flexible workforce support funds, and other tax incentives.
East Alton Mayor Darren Carlton expressed his gratitude, stating, "The modernization of Wieland's East Alton facility is a major boost for our local economy. We appreciate the state's support in making this project a reality and look forward to our continued partnership with Wieland."
Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski highlighted the long-standing impact of Wieland on East Alton: "Wieland has been a cornerstone of good-paying union jobs in East Alton for over a century. Today, that legacy is reinforced with this groundbreaking. This investment will leave a lasting impact, and I’m proud to support Wieland’s growth alongside our state leaders."
Christy George, President & CEO of Intersect Illinois, noted, "Wieland's groundbreaking marks a transformative moment for both the company and Illinois, strengthening our position in advanced manufacturing and driving innovation in electric vehicle production. We’re proud to partner with Wieland in fostering economic growth."
Mark Denzler, President & CEO of the Illinois Manufacturers' Association, called the expansion a clear sign that Illinois remains an attractive destination for business. "Thanks to the efforts of Governor Pritzker and lawmakers, Illinois continues to attract capital investment and job creation."
Lenny Singh, Chairman and President of Ameren Illinois, added, "This $500 million investment in modern manufacturing will fuel long-term growth, benefiting both the economy and energy infrastructure in the region. We're committed to supporting a sustainable energy future, and this expansion aligns with that vision."
Wieland’s investment comes as part of a broader trend of investments in the EV and clean energy sectors, including Rivian’s $1.5 billion investment in Central Illinois, Avina Clean Hydrogen’s $820 million SAF facility in Southwest Illinois, and several other projects supporting the renewable energy and electric vehicle industries.
