Pa. American Water Completes $34M Becks Run Project

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (July 17, 2025) — Pennsylvania American Water has officially completed its $34 million Becks Run Road Water Main Replacement Project, strengthening water service reliability for nearly 137,000 customers across southern Allegheny County.

“The completion of the Becks Run Water Main Replacement Project marks a major milestone in our commitment to delivering safe, reliable water service to the Pittsburgh region,” said Justin Ladner, President of Pennsylvania American Water. “Replacing century-old infrastructure ensures that our systems are prepared to meet the needs of our customers today and for generations to come.”

The extensive project, which began in June 2024, replaced nearly three miles of aging 42-inch raw water mains. The original pipes, installed over 100 years ago, transported raw water from the Monongahela River to the Hays Mine Drinking Water Treatment Plant but had reached the end of their usable life.

Pennsylvania American Water hosted a community event at the Hays Mine Plant to mark the milestone, with local leaders, residents, and project partners on hand to celebrate the collaboration.

“This project exemplifies successful collaboration between public and private sectors for community benefit,” said Pittsburgh City Councilman Anthony Coghill. “We appreciate Pennsylvania American Water’s investment in our infrastructure and their work to respond to resident concerns and issues by coordinating with local leaders during the project. This was a complex project, and it was a collaborative effort at every stage.”

Throughout the construction, the utility coordinated closely with local agencies and emergency services to maintain traffic flow and minimize disruptions for neighborhoods and businesses along Becks Run Road.

“We thank the community for their patience and support throughout this complex project,” Ladner added. “Together, we’ve strengthened a vital part of our region’s drinking water infrastructure.”

With the project finished, all traffic restrictions along Becks Run Road have now been lifted — improving daily commutes and restoring full access to the surrounding community.

Part of a Broader Push for Reliable Infrastructure

The Becks Run upgrade is part of Pennsylvania American Water’s wider investment plan to modernize aging systems and secure drinking water for its 2.4 million customers statewide. Across the U.S., American Water (NYSE: AWK) continues to modernize legacy infrastructure as utilities face increased demand, climate resilience challenges, and regulatory compliance requirements.

More Upgrades Ahead

Looking ahead, Pennsylvania American Water is expected to announce additional pipeline replacement and system improvement projects in the Pittsburgh area and beyond as part of its long-term capital improvement program.
