Tutor Perini Corporation has secured a $48.6 million contract to rehabilitate the Alcatraz Island Main Prison Building. The project, awarded to its subsidiary Perini Management Services, will address structural deficiencies and deterioration caused by aging and weather.
The scope of work includes hazardous material abatement, concrete repair, steel reinforcement, foundation strengthening, window restoration, and seismic upgrades. The project aims to ensure the safety of the 1.4 million annual visitors and staff while preserving the historic integrity of the building.
Work is set to begin this month, with completion expected in the summer of 2027. The contract value has been added to the company's second-quarter backlog.
While this project focuses on historic preservation, it also highlights the complexities of working on sensitive structures. The need for specialized expertise in areas like hazardous material abatement and structural engineering is evident.
