12th Street Closure Planned for Lied Center Construction

Construction Owners Editorial Team

A section of 12th Street, between Q and R streets, will close beginning Feb. 2 to support coordinated construction projects led by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and the City of Lincoln.

The closure will allow for a major renovation and expansion of the Lied Center for Performing Arts, a privately funded project that is expected to continue through September 2027. University officials noted the work represents a significant investment in campus arts infrastructure and long-term community engagement.

Access and Parking Impacts

Despite the street closure, pedestrian access will remain available throughout the construction period. Sidewalks will stay open on:

  • the north side of the Lied Center along R Street, and
  • the west side of the Temple Building along 12th Street.

Parking will not be available within the closed section of 12th Street, and motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes while construction is underway.

Project Timeline and Next Steps

Construction is scheduled to begin in early February and extend through late summer 2027, with work phases coordinated to minimize disruption to nearby academic, performance, and administrative facilities.

University officials said additional details about the Lied Center renovation and expansion — including design features, construction milestones, and anticipated benefits — will be shared in the coming weeks.

Maps released by University Communication and Marketing show the affected roadway closure between Q and R streets, with pedestrian pathways remaining open around the perimeter of the construction site.
