Construction season is ramping up across Wisconsin, with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation planning more than 400 projects statewide in 2026 — many of which will significantly impact travel in and around Appleton and the Fox Cities region.

From major interstate upgrades to local road repairs, drivers can expect detours, closures and lane reductions throughout the year as crews work to improve infrastructure and ease long-term congestion.
Several key roadways in Harrison, Greenville and Ellington are scheduled for reconstruction and resurfacing, bringing both improvements and temporary disruptions.
A major resurfacing project will take place along U.S. 10/State 114 between Oneida Street and Calumet County N in Harrison. Work is expected to run from early May through late August, with ramp and lane closures anticipated during construction. In addition, Fire Lane 1 — a route leading to Waverly Beach in Menasha — will be closed for two weeks.
Meanwhile, State 76 in Greenville and Ellington is undergoing a full reconstruction. The project will convert the rural roadway into an urban-style street with curb and gutter infrastructure, while also adding a roundabout at the intersection with Outagamie County JJ. Construction began in March and is expected to continue through November, with the road closed for much of the duration.
The ongoing Interstate 41 expansion project remains one of the most significant construction efforts in the region, with multiple impacts expected throughout 2026.
According to transportation officials, several interchanges and connecting roads will experience closures or reduced access, including:
These improvements aim to enhance traffic flow and safety but will require drivers to plan for delays and alternate routes.
Another key project will affect State 96 (Wisconsin Avenue) in Grand Chute, where resurfacing and repair work is set to begin April 1 and continue through November.
The project includes concrete patching between Casaloma Drive and Lynndale Drive, along with resurfacing work extending to North Badger Avenue. Crews will also address the railroad crossing at Wisconsin Avenue and Badger Avenue.
While most of the work will involve single-lane closures, the intersection at Wisconsin and Badger is expected to shut down بالكامل for approximately three weeks at some point during construction.
With multiple overlapping projects, motorists in the Appleton area should prepare for changing traffic patterns throughout the year.
Transportation officials are urging drivers to stay alert in work zones, adhere to posted speed limits and avoid distractions behind the wheel. Travelers are also encouraged to check real-time updates on road conditions and closures before heading out.

The scale of Wisconsin’s 2026 construction program reflects a broader nationwide push to modernize aging infrastructure and accommodate population growth and increased traffic demand.
Projects like the I-41 expansion and State 76 reconstruction are designed not only to repair existing roads but also to improve long-term mobility, reduce congestion and enhance safety through modern design features such as roundabouts and upgraded interchanges.
However, the short-term impact on commuters and local businesses can be significant. Extended closures, detours and reduced accessibility may affect daily travel times and commercial activity, particularly in high-traffic corridors.
Officials emphasize that while the disruptions may be inconvenient, the long-term benefits — including smoother traffic flow, safer intersections and more resilient roadways — are expected to outweigh the temporary challenges.
