SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A major infrastructure project is underway in Sioux Falls as construction begins on a key stretch of Interstate 229, prompting significant traffic changes for local drivers.

City officials announced that northbound traffic between Minnesota Avenue and 26th Street will be temporarily rerouted onto the southbound lanes. The shift, which began Monday, is part of a broader interchange reconstruction project at Cliff Avenue.
In addition to the lane changes, the northbound on- and off-ramps at Cliff Avenue have been closed as construction crews begin work on upgrading the interchange.
The project marks the latest in a series of infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing traffic flow and safety in one of the city’s busiest corridors.
The lane realignment is expected to remain in place throughout much of the construction period, requiring drivers to adjust commuting patterns and remain alert to changing traffic conditions.
Officials said the goal of the traffic switch is to maintain two-way traffic while crews work on the northbound lanes and ramps. While disruptions are expected, the phased approach is designed to minimize congestion and allow construction to proceed efficiently.
All lanes are expected to reopen to normal traffic patterns by late 2026, when the reconstruction project is scheduled for completion.
The interchange at Cliff Avenue is a critical connection point within the Sioux Falls transportation network, serving both local and regional traffic. Improvements to the interchange are expected to reduce bottlenecks, improve safety and accommodate future growth in the area.
The I-229 project is part of a larger effort by the city of Sioux Falls to modernize transportation infrastructure and address increasing traffic demands driven by population growth and economic development.
Reconstruction of aging interchanges and roadways is a key priority for city planners, particularly in high-traffic areas where outdated designs can contribute to congestion and safety risks.
By upgrading the Cliff Avenue interchange, officials aim to improve traffic efficiency and provide a more reliable route for commuters, freight carriers and emergency services.
Drivers traveling through the construction zone are encouraged to use caution, follow posted signage and allow extra time for travel. Temporary lane shifts and ramp closures can create unfamiliar driving conditions, increasing the importance of awareness and reduced speeds in work zones.
The project also reflects broader national trends in infrastructure investment, as municipalities work to rehabilitate and modernize transportation systems that are critical to economic activity and daily life.
As construction progresses, city officials are expected to provide updates on traffic conditions and project milestones, helping residents and businesses navigate the ongoing changes.
