450,000-square-foot expansion to enhance patient care with cutting-edge technology and interconnected tunnel systems

St. Louis-based McCarthy Building Cos. has reached a significant milestone in the $500 million Hoag Hospital Irvine Expansion Project, marking the topping out of the concrete pour on Jan. 31, the company told Construction Dive via email.

California hospital expansion ...

The 450,000-square-foot expansion aims to bolster medical services at the Irvine, California, hospital, featuring two new inpatient hospital buildings, two outpatient medical office structures, a logistics facility, a dedicated urgent care unit for cancer patients, and an expansion of an existing inpatient hospital.

The new structures are designed to incorporate advanced surgical suites and state-of-the-art medical technology. "The new facilities will include cutting-edge technology and advanced surgical suites," McCarthy stated. The project also integrates laser scanning technology to improve construction accuracy and efficiency.

One of the expansion's most innovative aspects is its interconnected network of tunnels, which will streamline operations across multiple buildings and improve efficiency in transporting medical supplies, equipment, and staff. The campus will also house a co-location office to enhance coordination among medical teams.

Beyond its medical advancements, the project prioritizes patient and staff well-being. "Natural daylight and garden views are incorporated into all patient rooms, staff respite zones, family areas and communal spaces," McCarthy noted in its release. The exterior design also emphasizes outdoor spaces for dining, social gatherings, therapeutic movement, quiet reflection, and meditation.

As part of Hoag's long-term vision to expand healthcare accessibility in Orange County, the project will introduce a more patient-centric design, enhancing comfort and healing environments.

Construction is on track for completion in 2026, according to Hoag, the regional healthcare system overseeing the Irvine hospital. Once finished, the expanded campus will stand as a leading-edge healthcare facility, designed to meet the growing demand for advanced medical services in the region.
