Meta Breaks Ground on $1B AI Data Center in Tulsa, Expanding U.S. Infrastructure Footprint

Meta has officially broken ground on a new artificial intelligence-optimized data center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, marking a significant expansion of its U.S. infrastructure footprint and reinforcing the company’s aggressive push into AI development.

The facility will be Meta’s 28th data center in the United States and its 32nd globally, while also representing the company’s first project in Oklahoma. The development is part of Meta’s broader $600 billion investment commitment aimed at scaling U.S. infrastructure over the next three years.

The Tulsa data center is designed to support Meta’s growing AI workloads as the company accelerates its “Superintelligence” initiatives. Increasingly, the tech giant is positioning itself not only as a social media company but also as a major data infrastructure developer focused on powering next-generation technologies.

AI Growth Driving Construction Demand

Meta’s expansion comes amid a broader federal push to strengthen domestic artificial intelligence capabilities. A White House AI action plan released in July 2025 emphasized the importance of supporting U.S. businesses to ensure “global dominance in artificial intelligence,” while also calling for the reduction of regulatory barriers.

This policy environment has helped accelerate large-scale projects like Meta’s Tulsa facility, as companies move quickly to capitalize on favorable regulatory conditions. The company is also working against potential policy shifts in future administrations, prompting a rapid buildout of data center capacity.

The Tulsa project alone represents more than $1 billion in regional investment. At peak construction, the site is expected to employ over 1,000 workers, providing a substantial boost to the local construction workforce. Once operational, the facility will support approximately 100 full-time jobs.

Meta is also committing more than $25 million toward local infrastructure improvements, including upgrades to roads and water systems. These investments are aimed at ensuring the project integrates effectively with the surrounding community while supporting long-term regional growth.

Workforce Development and Community Impact

Beyond construction and infrastructure spending, Meta is investing in workforce development initiatives to support the growing demand for digital infrastructure skills. In Tulsa, the company is partnering with Tulsa Community College to establish a cross-institutional training program and learning lab focused on technical trades.

“We anticipate this partnership will create a pipeline of 200+ graduates annually in technical trades, including cooling simulation, fiber optics, and structured cabling, along with AI and data analytics programming,” Meta said.

The company has also pledged to support water and electricity needs in host communities while participating in the White House’s “Ratepayer Protection Pledge,” which aims to shield consumers from potential cost increases tied to large-scale infrastructure developments.

However, questions remain about the long-term impacts of data centers on local communities. Some reports have highlighted concerns about resource consumption and environmental strain associated with large facilities. While Meta has committed to mitigating these effects, the full impact of such projects will depend on execution and ongoing community engagement.

Still, the Tulsa data center underscores the scale of Meta’s investment in AI infrastructure and its influence on construction activity nationwide. As demand for data processing and storage continues to surge, similar projects are expected to play a central role in shaping the future of both the technology and construction sectors.
