PC Construction Wins National CMAA Award for BETA Technologies Facility

PC Construction, based in South Burlington, Vermont, has been honored with a National Project Achievement Award by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA). The award recognizes the company’s outstanding work on the BETA Technologies Manufacturing and Assembly Facility, which produces electric aircraft and charging infrastructure.

The facility, completed in 2023, features a 188,500-square-foot high-bay building located next to Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport. It includes areas for aircraft assembly, office spaces, and support facilities. The project also involved significant site preparation, including blasting, excavation, a parking lot, utility road construction, and a 2.7-acre geothermal field, one of the largest in New England.

The CMAA's National Project Achievement Awards recognize top projects that exemplify excellence in construction management. The BETA Technologies facility won in the commercial, sports, entertainment, or hospitality category for projects valued over $50 million.

The project posed several challenges, such as zoning issues, supply chain disruptions, and the facility’s proximity to an active airport. Additionally, the evolving needs of BETA led to major design and scope changes mid-project. Despite these hurdles, PC Construction completed the project on an accelerated timeline, starting construction in June 2022 and enabling BETA to begin equipment installation within 12 months. Just a year later, BETA successfully rolled out its first production-intent electric aircraft from the new facility.

Alex Gagnon from BETA Technologies shared, “PC had the mental flexibility to align with BETA as a startup, not just as a company doing a construction project. Specifically, PC embraced scheduling the way we define it: not just getting something done by the deadline, but getting it done ASAP. The result, a net-zero building where we will build net-zero aircraft, is something we can all be proud of.”

Matt Cooke, President and CEO of PC Construction, expressed his pride, saying, “I am so proud to have been a part of this important project for the State of Vermont, and for the incredible team who poured their heart and soul into the design and construction efforts. This was a truly collaborative project from the start, and the resulting success is testament to that team effort.”
