The project is being delivered by SR 400 Peach Partners, a consortium that includes ACCIONA, ACS Group and Meridiam. The partnership is responsible for the design, construction, financing and long-term operation of the corridor under a 55-year agreement.

A formal groundbreaking ceremony was held in Alpharetta, attended by representatives from the Georgia Department of Transportation, the State Road and Tollway Authority, the U.S. Department of Transportation and various elected officials. The event, organized by True North 400, marked the official launch of construction activities.

With an investment of approximately $10.8 billion (€9.8 billion), the project will introduce dynamically priced express lanes in both directions along a 16-mile stretch of SR 400. The corridor will run from the North Springs MARTA Station to an area north of McFarland Parkway.

Enhancing Mobility and Reducing Congestion

Once complete, the project is expected to significantly improve travel time reliability and provide motorists with an alternative to congested general-purpose lanes.

“Once complete, the project will improve travel time reliability, increase road capacity, and give drivers the option to bypass congestion through managed lanes.”

In addition to benefits for drivers, the development also supports public transportation improvements. The express lanes will include dedicated, toll-free access for MARTA’s future bus rapid transit (BRT) system, helping to expand transit options across metro Atlanta.

The project is also designed to integrate seamlessly with existing and planned managed lane systems throughout the region, strengthening overall network connectivity and improving regional mobility.

Early Construction and Broader U.S. Portfolio

Initial construction activities will focus on site mobilization, surveying and geotechnical investigations. Crews will also begin utility coordination, clearing and grading, traffic management installations and foundational work for structures and retaining systems.

Beyond the SR 400 initiative, ACCIONA continues to grow its footprint in the United States through a range of infrastructure projects. The company is currently leading the design and construction of the Calcasieu River Bridge in Louisiana, a major upgrade along Interstate 10 aimed at improving safety and connectivity.

In North Dakota, ACCIONA is part of the Red River Valley Alliance, delivering the Fargo-Moorhead Flood Diversion Channel project in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The project is designed to protect more than 235,000 residents from severe flooding.

The company is also active in the water sector, having completed the renovation of the Tampa Bay desalination plant in Florida. It is currently involved in the Doheny Ocean Desalination Plant in California and multiple water treatment projects in Puerto Rico, collectively benefiting approximately 325,000 residents.

In renewable energy, ACCIONA Energía operates about 3 gigawatts of installed capacity across the U.S., including wind, solar and energy storage systems.

Additionally, ACCIONA Cultura has undertaken cultural projects at notable institutions such as the National Museum of Immigration on Ellis Island and the Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx.

The SR 400 Express Lanes project represents one of the largest transportation investments in Georgia’s history and is expected to play a critical role in addressing long-term mobility challenges in the rapidly growing Atlanta metropolitan area.
