LEXINGTON, Ky. — Walsh Construction and the University of Kentucky have launched the second cohort of their pre-apprenticeship program, expanding efforts to build a sustainable pipeline of skilled construction workers in the region.

The initiative, tied to the ongoing construction of the University of Kentucky’s Cancer and Advanced Ambulatory Building, brings together participants from multiple trade partners for an immersive, hands-on training experience designed to prepare them for careers in the construction industry.

The current cohort includes seven participants representing seven trade partner companies. The program runs for eight weeks through June 9 and requires a full-time commitment of approximately 40 hours per week.

Hands-On Training on Active Job Sites

Program organizers emphasize that the pre-apprenticeship model stands apart from traditional classroom instruction by placing participants directly on active construction job sites.

“What makes this program different is that it’s real,” said Muhummad Starks, project manager for Walsh Construction, who leads the program. “Participants are on an active jobsite, working alongside our trade partners, learning what the work actually looks like day-to-day. We’re not just introducing people to construction — we’re giving them a pathway to a long-term career.”

Participants receive training from both skilled tradespeople and project management professionals, gaining exposure to job site operations, technical skills and workplace expectations. The program also includes mentorship opportunities, subcontractor sponsorship and structured pathways into full-time employment or registered apprenticeship programs.

Expanding Workforce Development Efforts

The pre-apprenticeship program is designed to bridge the gap between education and employment by equipping participants with job-readiness skills while introducing them to various construction trades.

“When Walsh introduced the Pre-Apprenticeship Program, we said yes. Their commitment to this program is sincere and it reflects their values as a company,” said Marilyn Clark, economic engagement manager at the University of Kentucky. “This program is growing a pipeline of workers needed in the skilled trades. The greater impact is seen in the individual participants. They now have opportunities for sustainable careers in construction with competitive wages. It really is changing lives. The University of Kentucky is pleased to be a partner with Walsh in this impactful work.”

The program’s first cohort launched in August 2025 with three subcontractor partners. The expansion to seven trade partners in the second cohort reflects increasing industry participation and investment in workforce development.

Officials say the program aligns with broader efforts to address labor shortages in the construction sector by creating accessible entry points for individuals interested in skilled trades careers.

By combining classroom instruction, field experience and mentorship, the initiative aims to prepare participants for long-term success while supporting ongoing construction activity across the region.
