Weslaco is rapidly transforming into one of the fastest-growing commercial hubs in the Rio Grande Valley, living up to its longtime slogan as the “city on the grow.”
Strategically positioned in the Mid-Valley, Weslaco has become a magnet for new residential neighborhoods, commercial development and industrial investment. City leaders and economic development officials say the momentum reflects strong population growth, regional connectivity and increasing interest from national retailers looking to expand in South Texas.
From large-scale retail projects to infrastructure upgrades, development activity is visible across multiple corridors of the city.
A major highlight of the city’s retail expansion is a new $46.5 million bulk-buy warehouse from Sam's Club, currently under construction on the east side of Weslaco.
The project includes a 168,000-square-foot warehouse and a Sam’s Club-branded fueling station, situated on nearly 22 acres at the corner of Farm-to-Market Road 1015 and Barbee Drive. The large-scale development is expected to significantly boost retail options for Mid-Valley residents while reducing the need to travel to neighboring cities for wholesale shopping.
Construction crews have made visible progress in recent weeks, with many of the warehouse’s exterior walls already erected. Heavy equipment and structural framing dominate the site as the building takes shape. The store is expected to open later this year, further strengthening Weslaco’s retail footprint.
The addition of a fuel station alongside the warehouse is anticipated to increase traffic to the area and encourage surrounding commercial growth, potentially attracting restaurants, service providers and additional retailers to nearby parcels.
The Sam’s Club project is part of a broader pattern of expansion in Weslaco. As the largest city in the Mid-Valley, it serves as a central access point for surrounding communities, making it attractive for large-format retailers and commercial developers.
Economic development officials point to Weslaco’s available land, improving infrastructure and regional highway access as key drivers of growth. With continued residential construction and steady population increases across Hidalgo County, demand for retail, grocery and service-oriented businesses continues to rise.
Large anchor projects such as Sam’s Club often serve as catalysts for secondary development. Industry analysts note that warehouse clubs tend to stimulate adjacent commercial activity, increase property values and generate new employment opportunities both directly and indirectly.
For Weslaco, the $46.5 million investment represents more than just a new store — it signals confidence in the city’s long-term growth trajectory and its role as a retail destination in South Texas.
As construction continues and new projects break ground, Weslaco appears poised to further solidify its reputation as a true “city on the grow.”
