WICHITA, Kan. — A construction worker has died after a fall from a multi-story building at a downtown Wichita job site, authorities confirmed Monday.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. at the Bio-Med building near English and Topeka streets, just west of INTRUST Bank Arena. According to reports from the scene, the worker fell from the seventh floor on the Topeka side of the structure, dropping approximately 60 feet.
Emergency responders from the Wichita Fire Department arrived quickly and initiated medical care.
Battalion Chief Jose Ocadiz said the first responding crew began treating the worker immediately upon arrival. Due to the severity of the fall, the individual was initially listed in critical condition.
Despite life-saving efforts, the worker later died from injuries sustained in the fall.
Officials have not yet released the identity of the victim, and further details about the circumstances leading to the fall remain under investigation.
In a statement released Monday afternoon, Midwest Drywall confirmed the fatality and expressed condolences:
“Midwest Drywall is heartbroken to confirm that a member of our team passed away following an incident today at a construction site in downtown Wichita.”
“Our prayers and deepest sympathies are with the individual’s family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.”
The company added that the site has been secured and all work has been temporarily suspended while the incident is reviewed.
“Out of respect for the individual and their family, no identifying information will be released at this time.”

Fatal falls remain one of the leading causes of death in the construction industry, particularly in projects involving multi-story structures. Incidents like this often prompt reviews of fall protection systems, safety protocols and compliance with federal workplace safety standards.
Investigators are expected to examine whether proper safety measures — such as harnesses, guardrails or fall arrest systems — were in place at the time of the incident.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) typically conducts reviews in such cases to determine whether workplace safety violations contributed to the accident.
Construction activity in downtown Wichita has increased in recent years, with multiple redevelopment and commercial projects underway. As work continues to expand vertically, safety oversight remains a critical priority for contractors and regulators alike.
Authorities said more information will be released as the investigation progresses.
