The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has kicked off its spring construction season in Sweetwater County, mobilizing crews across multiple infrastructure projects aimed at improving safety and road conditions.

With warmer weather returning, work is ramping up on key corridors including Interstate 80, local bridges in Green River, and major roadways in Rock Springs. Drivers can expect traffic shifts, lane closures, and extended work zones as projects progress through the coming months.
One of the most visible projects is underway at the Interstate 80 tunnels near Green River, where crews are installing upgraded conduit and lighting systems.
Traffic will be shifted into a head-to-head configuration in the eastbound tunnel beginning March 30, allowing crews to work safely in the westbound tunnel. The upgrades are part of broader efforts to modernize tunnel infrastructure and improve long-term safety and visibility for drivers.
Construction at the tunnels is expected to continue through late June, with periodic traffic adjustments as work advances.
Beyond the tunnel work, WYDOT is also advancing a series of additional infrastructure improvements throughout Sweetwater County.
In Green River, crews are completing rehabilitation work on the Uinta Drive bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad. The project focuses on repairing expansion devices—components that often create noticeable noise and wear for drivers.
“Many people know this spot, where you drive over the metal expansion pieces and you hear a loud clank. We are going to get that fixed,” District 3 construction engineer Peter Stinchcomb said.
Motorists should expect single-lane closures during active work periods as crews complete these upgrades.
Meanwhile, in Rock Springs, work is progressing on the South Belt Loop (Wyoming Highway 376), where concrete slab repairs are moving into a second phase. The next stage will cover the stretch between Walnut Street and Stable Lane and is expected to last approximately 20 days.
A longer-term project is also beginning along Interstate 80 near Patrick Draw, where pavement rehabilitation will require significant traffic adjustments.
Starting April 1, traffic will shift to head-to-head operations in the westbound lanes between mile markers 141 and 155. The work will include milling and paving, with a projected completion date of October 31, 2026.

As part of the project, the eastbound Bitter Creek rest area will be closed for the duration of construction.
WYDOT is urging drivers to remain cautious when traveling through work zones, emphasizing the importance of reduced speeds and awareness of construction crews.
The agency continues to highlight the risks associated with distracted driving, particularly in active construction areas where conditions can change quickly.
Drivers are encouraged to check real-time road conditions and sign up for alerts to stay informed about closures and delays as the projects move forward.
