According to a company news release, the final phase focused on modernizing the property’s signature 24,000-square-foot Grand Ballroom, positioning the hotel to better serve large-scale meetings and events in an increasingly competitive hospitality market. The completion brings to a close a multiyear transformation that has touched nearly every part of the property.

The project reflects a broader trend across the hospitality sector, where operators are investing heavily in upgraded meeting spaces, enhanced guest experiences and advanced technology to attract conferences and large gatherings.

Grand Ballroom upgrades anchor final phase

As the “capstone of the transformation,” the final phase introduced a reimagined Grand Ballroom featuring LED ceiling panels, updated finishes and redesigned breakout spaces. The adjacent 7,000-square-foot foyer has also been significantly enhanced with built-in registration desks, digital screens for customized branding and a digital feature wall intended to serve as a focal point for major events.

“Together, these updates deliver a cohesive, high-impact environment designed for today’s large-scale meetings and events,” the release stated.

These upgrades are aimed at meeting the evolving expectations of event planners who increasingly prioritize immersive, tech-enabled environments capable of hosting hybrid and high-capacity gatherings.

The ballroom renovation builds on earlier phases that modernized other key event spaces across the hotel, reinforcing its position as a premier destination for conventions and corporate functions.

Multi-phase investment reshaped entire property

The broader renovation effort unfolded over several years and multiple phases. The first phase, completed in 2023, focused on transforming guest rooms and suites in the West Tower, introducing multifunctional layouts and a contemporary design approach.

The second phase, completed in 2024 in conjunction with the hotel’s 50th anniversary, included upgrades to the Regency and Crystal Ballrooms as well as renovations to guest rooms in the East Tower. In total, 2,032 rooms were modernized during that phase alone.

In addition to the recent $200 million renovation, the property has seen more than $368 million in total investment since 2013, beginning with a $168 million overhaul of its lobby and meeting spaces.

The Chicago project is part of a broader wave of reinvestment across the Hyatt Regency brand portfolio. Other recent projects include a $70 million refresh at the Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center, as well as upgrades at properties in Washington, D.C., and Texas. Additional renovations are also underway at Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe, with completion expected next year.

The Hyatt Regency brand now operates more than 195 properties across 30 countries, underscoring the scale of ongoing capital improvements aimed at maintaining competitiveness in the global hospitality market.
