The funding request, submitted through the Iowa Board of Regents, would support building initiatives at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Northern Iowa over the next three years.

If approved by the state legislature, the funding would help modernize academic facilities and strengthen workforce training programs, particularly in high-demand fields such as healthcare.

Funding Request Targets Key Campus Projects

The universities are collectively asking for $57.9 million in capital funding spread across a three-year period. Of that amount, approximately $16 million is requested for the upcoming fiscal year to begin work on the proposed projects.

These construction efforts are intended to improve learning environments, upgrade research infrastructure, and ensure campuses remain competitive in attracting students and faculty.

One of the most prominent projects included in the request is a new nursing simulation laboratory at the University of Iowa, which would help train future healthcare professionals through advanced medical simulation technologies.

University of Iowa Seeks 20M for Nursing Simulation Lab

The University of Iowa is requesting $20 million to build a modern nursing simulation facility designed to enhance hands-on training for students entering the healthcare field.

Simulation labs allow nursing students to practice real-world medical scenarios in a controlled environment before working with patients. These facilities typically include advanced medical mannequins, hospital-style equipment, and digital monitoring systems that replicate real clinical settings.

University officials say expanding simulation capacity is increasingly important as healthcare education programs grow and hospitals seek more trained professionals.

Students currently use simulation labs on the UI Health Care campus, where they practice responding to emergencies and routine medical procedures as part of their training.

State Funding Request Part of Larger Budget Plan

The construction funding request is part of a broader budget proposal from the Board of Regents, which oversees Iowa’s three public universities.

In addition to capital funding, the system is requesting $8.2 million in additional education appropriations for the 2027 fiscal year.

If approved, total state support for Iowa’s public universities would increase from $623 million to about $631 million.

University leaders say the additional funding is necessary to maintain academic programs, support workforce development, and address growing demand for higher education and professional training.

Growing Need for Modern Academic Infrastructure

Across the country, universities are investing heavily in new academic buildings and technology-enabled training facilities to better prepare students for evolving industries.

Healthcare education, engineering programs, and research initiatives often require specialized infrastructure, making construction funding an essential part of long-term campus planning.

For Iowa’s universities, the proposed construction projects represent a strategic effort to expand capacity, improve teaching environments, and strengthen partnerships with industries that rely on highly trained graduates.

Lawmakers will ultimately determine whether the funding request moves forward as part of the state’s upcoming budget negotiations.
