A major expansion project is underway at a food distribution facility in Aurora, Illinois, as Loaves & Fishes Community Services seeks to increase its capacity to serve growing numbers of food-insecure residents across the Chicago metropolitan region.
Krusinski Construction Company has begun building a 32,000-square-foot addition to the organization's Food Distribution Hub, a project that will more than double the operational footprint of the facility and enhance its ability to store, manage and distribute food throughout DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will counties.
The expansion comes as demand for food assistance continues to rise. According to project stakeholders, food insecurity within the organization's service area has increased significantly in recent years, creating a need for additional warehouse space and more efficient logistics infrastructure.
Key elements of the project include expanded freezer and refrigerated storage areas to accommodate larger volumes of frozen and perishable food products. The project will also add a larger depressed loading dock designed to improve access for full-size tractor-trailers and streamline delivery operations.
Site improvements are another major component of the work. The redesigned layout will increase parking availability for volunteers and staff while improving traffic circulation for individuals picking up groceries, helping reduce congestion and improve overall efficiency.
From a construction standpoint, the project presents several technical challenges commonly associated with major facility expansions. Utility systems including water, natural gas and electrical service must be upgraded to support the increased building capacity, while careful coordination is required where the new structure connects with the existing facility.
To minimize disruption, construction activities are being completed in four phases. Initial work focuses on civil improvements and parking infrastructure, followed by construction of the new addition while existing operations remain active. Final phases will include landscaping, parking lot improvements and site integration work.
The facility serves as the central hub for a regional food distribution network that supports thousands of residents each week through multiple community-based distribution locations. Once completed, the expanded building is expected to significantly increase food storage and distribution capacity while strengthening collaboration with partner food pantries.
The project highlights continued investment in community-serving logistics facilities as nonprofit organizations adapt to increasing demand. For construction owners and developers, it demonstrates the importance of phased construction planning, utility infrastructure upgrades and operational continuity strategies when expanding occupied warehouse and distribution facilities.
